about

The eight colony is a 8-bit concept album, depicting the tribulations of a colony at the confines of the universe, fighting a foreign invading force. Constrained to the exile, the mighty colonists struggle to take their planet back, building up a fleet of highly manoeuvrable fighters provided with a new weapon engineered by their brilliant scientists.

The creation of this album was initiated by a rush of nostalgia I had in the past few years, the nostalgia of an era impregnated by the tone of the famous Commodore SID chip. I was on a momentum to recreate the sonic ambiance of the C64 scene, the great era of Hubbard, Galway and so many other great 8-bit composers.

The 80s gave birth to a new world, the world of video games which I enjoyed so much as a kid. I played countless hours, enjoying the highly immersive songs of games like Commando, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Bubble Bobble, Fist II, Gyruss, Bomb Jack, Spy vs Spy and so many others. Those games were keeping me in an ongoing mood for hours, it was an undepletable source of entertainment for me, my younger brother, and friends.

Surprisingly, I noticed I often had the urge to play games like Suicide Express just for the music, or sometimes found myself unable to 'press any key' on the Yie Are Kung-Fu title screen just because the music was simply awesome. All that made me realize that half of the entertainment came from the music itself. The video game could in fact be seen as an interactive video clip.

Anyway, here it is, finally! My contribution for the 8-bit scene, a few decades later! Eight songs to pay tribute to this great era! While this sonic signature may be inaccessible for those not versed in the C64 scene, it will undoubtedly charm any SID addicted nostalgist like me, looking for a brand new 45-minute SID fix. Enjoy!
